When X finished, Greytonia was so full of semen that a small stream seeped out between her vaginal folds. He pulled out of her slowly only semi-hard now, but not yet soft. Greytonia gasped with shock at the stark absence of him and squeezed her thighs together when he moved from on top of her. “Bend your knees,” X instructed. Grabbing a pillow from the head of the bed, he tucked it beneath Greytonia’s hips so that her pelvis was angled up and no more precious “evidence” was spilt. He then exhaled and fell down onto the bed beside her.

“Why do you call yourself X?” Greytonia whispered, sinking her fingers into her hair.

“My old name was European.” He frowned like saying the word “European” made him want to spit. His chest rising and falling with his breath, X lay on his back and stroked his bare lower abdomen with one hand, cradling the back of his head with the other. “I don’t want to be called by a slave’s name.”

“Then why not take an African name?”

“I can’t appropriate something that I’m not.”

“Sankofa says we’re all African if we follow the roots of our family tree back far enough.”

“I’m a Black man in America, Grey, I have no roots. I am the unknown variable,” he said. “Everything is unknown in this day and time. You don’t know me. No one knows me. White people sure as hell don’t know me. People don’t know each other but they fuck like rabbits in hopes of getting an unknown result. I’m X.”

Greytonia shifted her hips, pulling the crumpled, dirty and lopsided comforter that they lay on in the process. She twirled a kinky lock of her hair. “For eXtinction.”

X shrugged. “What was your name before Greytonia?”

“Ayo.” She frowned. “It’s Nigerian for Joy.”

“And now you call yourself Greytonia?” he asked, raising his eyebrows.

“All the women call themselves Tonia after the pandemic, because of Browntonia Hastings.”

“I know, but why Grey?”

“I don’t know…” Her chest rose and fell with her breathing. “I…” She pursed her lips. “I picked Grey because…” She brushed hair from her eyes. “Well, it’s how I felt,” she said. “After my family expired. I felt sad at first. Devastated like I wanted to expire too. I even tried it. Took a whole bunch of pills. But I woke up the next morning. And then…I just felt nothing. Dull and muted like something dead, but I was alive. I walk, talk, study science, but I’m dead.”

X shook his head. “You’re not dead, honey. You’re very much alive. And this,” he held up his open palm, “is it. This is what you got in 2026 – sex and companionship as we die out. Someone to fuck you good and hold your hand for a couple minutes before you die. But you’re alive, Grey. You’re very alive.” He fondled his slowly shrinking erection. “Joy just no longer lives on this planet.”

“Maybe the moon?” Greytonia murmured.

“Fuck no, they’re not happy on the moon.” he shook his head. “My bet’s on Saturn.
